Babywearing circa 1963

by Sling Lady on February 4, 2011

If you’ve ever worn baby carrier and had someone say “I wish they’d had those around when my kids were little!” this video is for you.  While babywearing has gotten much more widespread in North America in the last decade, it’s certainly not new, even to the US and Canada.   Here’s a link to a video of “Mrs. Peterson” being interviewed on CBS-TVs Telescope about her the various “baby toting equipment” she found around the world.  Her favorite is the “oriental carrier,”  which we now know as a Mei Tai.   Some of these contraptions would certainly make the CPSC recoil in horror! Plus, it’s pretty cool how much travel and research this lady did into different types of baby carriers – impressive by any standard, especially long before Google!  Definitely worth a look for any babywearing fans.

**Updated August 15, 1963, this photo now links to the CBS site with the video on it.  Sorry about the ads, but it’s worth waiting!**
